Hi I'm Tricia Simunds for About.com and today we're talking about comparing elliptical trainers to treadmills as far as workouts go. I am a senior lecturer at Emory University and I teach PE and nutrition.A treadmill is a piece of standard equipment. Most people can get out and walk on their own so getting on a treadmill is a very easy transition for somebody. All they have to do is program the machine with maybe some time and on a very basic level. They can add incline or elevation on a treadmill and it makes them feel like they're walking up a hill. And it's a very comfortable thing for people to transition to.The elliptical trainer is also a popular machine and the difference, the main difference would be the elliptical trainer moves kind of in an elliptical motion and your feet never leave the surface. And that's the biggest difference between an elliptical and a treadmill. So your feet never leave the ground so in theory that would knock down your intensity as far as your foot pounding on the ground. So the elliptical has always been kind of marketed as a machine that does not have a lot of impact. And that reason is because your foot is not really leaving the ground. It's a very efficient move for the body and very easy for people to get on and get comfortable with.So if you're starting out with a treadmill or an elliptical I would still recommend that you pay attention to how you're working out while you're working. And if you've been doing it for a long period of time I think one of the biggest problems people sometimes run into is that they'll do the exact same workout on the treadmill or the elliptical and they'll never ever change. So if your goal is to see change in your body that means you have to change what you're doing. So you can change what you're doing by adding a little intensity and you can increase your intensity on the treadmill by increasing your elevation or changing your speed. Or on the elliptical you can do the same by adding an increase in your incline and speed as well.So make sure that you pay attention and you don't get stuck in the same routine. Getting out there and getting moving is the first step but once we get moving we want to make sure that we are challenged if our goal is to see change.
