Hi, I’m Maria Saracen from ArtfullyNourished.com, and in this video for About.com I’m going to show you how to make a delicious green smoothie.The first thing I want to mention is that there are literally dozens, if not hundreds of recipes for green smoothies.  The two basic principles that I like to go by is one, to get as many greens into the smoothie as possible, because it is after all, a green smoothie and two, to try not to put too much fruit into the smoothie because although fruit helps make the greens more palatable, for health purposes, it’s better not to have too much fruit sugar in the drink.So, here’s my favorite green smoothie recipe which will make approximately 32 ounces:Now as I mentioned, there are many ways to make a green smoothie, and you can use kale, lettuce, dandelion or any other type of greens in addition to or instead of the spinach.You can also use celery, carrots, tomatoes, bell peppers, broccoli and many other types of vegetables in the smoothie.The reason I love using avocado, is because it gives the smoothie a really nice creamy texture, but of course, this is also an optional ingredient.Herbs and spices can also be improvised, and if you don’t like strong flavors, you don’t have to use them at all.In terms of supplements, you can add all kinds of things like acacia fiber, flax seeds, chia seeds - pretty much anything that will blend well.The next step is to put all the ingredients in a blender, making sure you have enough liquid to blend it all well.  You don’t have to add ice, but I personally like my smoothies nice and cold and I also like the texture that ice provides.Once that’s done, you’re ready to pour yourself a glass and enjoy!Now, if you have any green smoothie left over, you can store it in a glass or plastic container in the fridge.  It should keep for about 1 - 2 days but if you want to store it longer, freezing is also an option.  Keep in mind, however, that for optimum nutritional value and taste its best to drink your smoothie as soon as possible. Thank you so much for watching.  For more information and delicious recipes, please visit About.com!
