I am a clinical psychologist and today we will be discussing the signs and symptoms of alcoholism for About.com.There are signs that can indicate if someone is alcoholic or has alcohol dependence.If you want to quit drinking but find that you can't. Or you want to only drink a certain amount, but continually go over the line, that is a sign of alcohol dependence, as is if you need to drink more to get the same effect.If you experiencing withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating, shakiness or anxiety when you try to cut down drinking or when you try to stop altogether.If you spend a lot of time obtaining alcohol, drinking and then recovering from alcohol, that is a sign of alcohol dependence.Giving up other activities so you can drink, and continuing to drink even though it is causing problems in your life are also signs. Perhaps it is damaging your marriage or impacting your career.Additionally, it might be impacting your health such as if you have depression or other physical conditions.Other common signs of alcoholism include: drinking in the morning, drinking alone, or being drunk for long periods of time.To meet the criteria for either alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence, you do not have to experience all of these signs and symptoms.
