Hello, I'm Doctor Gerald Bernstein and today for About.com we're going to speak about using an online symptom checker for a child's illness. One of the big problems a parent faces is when their child becomes ill. When you go online, most important is that you go to a symptom checker that is specifically designed for illnesses in children because children are not little adults. They are different kinds of people who express illness in different ways.Going online to check symptoms is fine but what you're getting is some general information. Rare things occur rarely. And therefore most people are going to have normal illnesses, normal illness patterns. You know rashes are very, very common. What is it? Does it have a fever associated with it? Is it something like poison ivy or is it associated with some other virus? Not only will the pediatrician be aware of what illnesses are currently prevalent in the community, one, they'll recognize did you present an additional symptom that's not part of that, and two, they will tell what to expect. That, by and large, if there is an elevated temperature, it should hit a peak on day two and it should be gone by day three. If it's not, then you'll need to come in.Again, nothing is written in stone. Most important, if you see your child is getting sicker while you're observing them, then you pick them up and take them to the Emergency Room. Thanks for watching and for more information, please go to About.com.
