How to Write a Descriptive Sentence
音量
Hello. This is Heather Kamins for About.com, and I'm here to talk to you about how to write a descriptive sentence.

What is a Descriptive Sentence?

Whether you're writing fiction, an essay, or a story about your own life, descriptive writing helps the reader feel like they're part of the story. Descriptive sentences use the five senses to help the reader connect with the sentence. Sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. For most of us, it's easy to rely on our sense of sight. But try to mix things up a little bit! Use a smell or a taste to make things more descriptive.

How to Make a Sentence Descriptive

To make a sentence as descriptive as possible, try to get down into the little details. For example, instead of saying that someone looked tired, say they had dark circles under their eyes or their head drooped forward. When you're doing descriptive writing, watch out for weak verbs. These are verbs that aren't very descriptive, and they're often paired with an adverb to try and make them more descriptive.

So for example, instead of saying that someone spoke softly, you can say that they murmured or mumbled. Those verbs are more specific, so they're more evocative. Similarly, instead of saying someone walked quickly across the room, they strode across the room. Read it over and revise it as needed. You may want to let it sit a little while, a day or two, and then come back to it.
